Sciatica
Sciatica is characterized by pain that runs along the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve extends from the lower back, through the hips and buttocks, down each leg.
Sciatica typically occurs when a herniated disk or excessive bone growth puts pressure on a part of the nerve. This results in inflammation, pain, and often some numbness in the affected leg.
Symptoms
- It can appear at almost any point along the nerve pathway.
- The pain can range from mild ache to sharp, burning pain.
- Typically, sciatica affects only one side of the body.
- Some people also have numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the leg or foot
